Kembla Heights
The land around Kembla Heights began to be purchased in the 1870's by Ebenezer Vickery and sold to establish the Mt Kembla Coal and Oil Company in the 1880s. The Northern portion was built as a company owned village to house the miners and their families complete with local dance hall, reading rooms, churches and shops. While many of the buildings have now disappeared, it remains to this day a company owned village. The Southern portion is known as Windy Gully, Kembla Heights and is the last resting place of many of the victims of the 1902 Mt Kembla Mine disaster. This area is both company owned and in private ownership.
