PREMIER Bus Service

From Kembla Heights to Wollongong via Unanderra and Figtree. Premier Buses are the only bus company servicing Mt Kembla and Kembla Heights. If you have not traveled with them for a while, you can confirm the timetable is still current by visiting transportnsw.info or calling 131 500. Mount Kembla Memorial Pathway Group

The Mount Kembla Memorial Pathway group has been active since 2004 project managing the construction of three stages of Mt Kembla's Memorial Pathway.  The Pathway begins at the entrance to the village and follows the old rail line towards the old Mt Kembla Colliery site. Stage one ends at Stones Road Mt Kembla with art and poetry along the way. Stage 2 begins at Stones Road and ends at Kirkwood Place; Stage 3 is a bush track from the bottom of Benjamin Rd and up to the site of the old Bradford Breaker. 
Volunteers meet at the memorial area at the bottom of Stones Rd from 8.30 am every Wednesday. Join them for some morning tea and unstrenuous gardening. The gardening group works within Council bush-care resources. Click on the button below to learn more about their activities.

Mount Kembla Soldiers and Miners Memorial Church

The first church in Mt Kembla was known as the American Creek Chapel. The church building was opened 26th of April 1858, doubling as a school building. It was licensed as a place of worship in September 1860. In 1932 the church was rebuilt and renamed the Soldiers' and Miners' Memorial Church. The church continues to function as a house of worship as part of Figtree Anglican Church. A traditional  Prayer Book service is held at 9:30 am each Sunday. A combined Sunday school is available for primary school aged children between 9:30 am and 10:30 am; at the end of each term, the children join the church congregation for a performance and morning tea. 

The annual Mine Disaster Memorial Service is held each July, to commemorate the 1902 mine disaster when 96 men and boys were killed in Australia’s largest industrial accident. It is believed to be the longest continuing commemoration service held in Australia. 

Mount Kembla Rural Fire Service

Mt Kembla Rural Fire Service is found in the centre of Mt Kembla village on the corner of Cordeaux Road and James Road. Updates on local conditions can be found on the Illawarra RFS Facebook page and on the large RFS sign as you enter the village of Mt Kembla.

The local brigade is always looking for volunteers, please contact the captain Ben Jacobsen on 0401736483 if you would like to join them.

Mt Kembla RFS is also participating in AIDER, a program run to assist elderly, infirm or disabled residents with a free, one-off service in preparing their house for the bush fire season. The program runs between August and January each year. Ring the captain to book your service in before the bushfire season. Follow them on their Mount Kembla Rural Fire Service Facebook page. 

Mount Kembla Tennis Courts

Mt Kembla tennis courts are situated on Stafford Road, Mt Kembla. Apart from one court, the site contains a picnic table, small children's playground and toilets.  Resurfacing of court, new fence and lights to enable evening tennis matches were installed at a cost of $27,863 from the Dendrobium Community Enhancement Program (DCEP) in 2015.

Mount Kembla Sport and Recreation Oval

"The Rec" as it was once known, now Mt Kembla Oval is situated at on Stones Road Mt Kembla. It is the home ground of Mt Kembla Lowries and contains toilets that are usually locked and children's playground equipment. 

Kembla Heights Bowling and Recreation Club

Kembla Heights Bowling and Recreation Club is a not for profit community organisation built by miners for the local community in the 1950s. The club has recently seen a new burst of enthusiasm with refurbishments to transform it into a family friendly venue. It boasts the flattest green on the hilliest mountain in Wollongong and invites you to enjoy the fresh mountain air and scenic views, with a game of bowls, or a chat and a drink with friendly patrons.

Mount Kembla Public School

Mt Kembla Public School was first established on the 11th of February 1859 for the small rural community along the banks of American Creek. It was opened with the name Violet Hill School on the request of Henry Gordon and built on land purchased from William Stafford. The school's name was changed to Mount Kembla in October 1884 after the establishment of the Mt Kembla Coal and Oil Company and its associated growing mining community. The old school building still standing today was built in 1896. Both the old school building and Headmasters residence (now the school office) are heritage listed buildings. School numbers have fluctuated slightly over the years but tend to hover around 130-150 students.  Click through to the school web site for more information. 

Kembla Heights Fishing Club

Kembla Heights Fishing Club is a family friendly, not-for-profit club established over 20 years ago and runs out of Kembla Heights Bowling and Recreation Club. Mount Kembla Hotel is a heritage-listed building and is the oldest weatherboard hotel in the Illawarra established in 1898.The scenic views of the surrounding escarpment and award winning restaurant make it a favourite venue for many tourists and artists of the local area.

Mt Kembla Rugby League Football Club - Lowries

Mt Kembla Rugby League Football Club was established in 1912. Known at one time as the Mount Kembla Rovers circa 1940s, the club now takes it name from the crimson Rosella that is common in Mt Kembla - The Lowries. Mt Kembla Oval Stones Road Mount Kembla is their home oval. For club information and updates you can friend "Mt Kembla Lowries" on Facebook - link provided below. 

Ruby's is a Heritage Listed restaurant nestled in the historic mining village of Kembla Heights. It first traded as the village store and Post Office to a thriving community of coal miners and their families in the late 1800's. Named after Ruby Moore - a famous local resident and Post Mistress during the 1920's and 1930's, the store has undergone much careful restoration and is now home to one of the most well loved restaurants in the Illawarra. South Coast Country Music Association

The South Coast Country Music Association, was formed by Betty and Kevin Reiman in 1971 at Dapto before moving to Dunmore in 1978 and then to Mt Kembla in 1982, the aims of the SCCMA are to promote Country Music through package shows and social events.

Family Days are held on the 4th Sunday of every Month between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM at the Kembla Heights Community Hall, Harry Graham Drive, Kembla Heights.
