Looking after our heritage places

mT kEMBLA's CULTURAL HERITAGE - Worth Preserving

Our community is fortunate that buildings and the entire Kembla Heights Heritage Conservation Area have been set aside for preservation - they help shed light on an important part of the Illawarra's local history.

Mt Kembla and Kembla Heights were zoned as villages by Wollongong city Council in 1984. Kembla Heights including Windy Gully were considered so unique that they were set aside as the Kembla Heights Heritage Conservation Area in 1991. To maintain the authentic 19th & 20th century mining village atmosphere strict development controls are in place preserving the casual, rural and historic views, buildings and existing street furniture.

Visiting Kembla Heights is like taking a step back in time. The local community cherishes this unique character evidenced by a long history of activism to protect the cottages and village from inappropriate developments. Local miners have gone out on strike to prevent vacated cottages from being demolished. Please help maintain what they fought for.

If you treasure Kembla Heights, don't be passive looking through all the old photos, do something to make sure that what remains is protected.

Mt Kembla and Kembla Heights have fought many battles over the years to retain their unique historic village atmosphere and stop inappropriate modern development. The voice of the community has struggled to be heard, yet the persistence and dedication over more than 50 years has ensured much has been saved. More than ever it is important to educate and advocate for a fast disappearing village atmosphere.

Take an interest in the changes occurring.  Whether you are a local, a descendant of a local, or a visitor that appreciates the historic atmosphere, your opinion matters. Write in to Wollongong City Council and let the local and state representatives know Kembla Heights must be protected as intended by its local Heritage Conservation Area listing and should have its 2011 NSW State Heritage Listing nomination approved.

How can you help?

  • Email local and State Government representatives asking them to add the Kembla Heights Heritage Conservation Area to the State Heritage List - see contacts on right.

  • Become familiar with the development controls for the Kembla Heights Heritage Conservation Area - Click on button above.

  • Look after heritage listed places, preserve and restore them, but please don't tart them up with fake heritage. They were heritage listed because they tell a story about our past. Adding decorative elements that were never historically present changes their story and implies a more affluent community built them than the humble mining community that did.

  • View development applications on exhibition at Wollongong City Council web site and scroll to Kembla Heights and Mount Kembla - click on the button below. Have your say in what happens in the community. Your voice matters.

National Trust of Australia

Always on hand to advocate for heritage causes,

"Since the 1940s, the Trust has led campaigns to protect significant heritage at risk, whether built, natural or cultural." Recently NToA got involved in a successful campaign to protect Kembla Heights from a development that did not comply with Development Controls or standard conservation practices for restoring heritage places and won. The non conforming structures were removed and replaced with complying ones.
